Presented to a current faculty or staff member whose commitment and dedication to the University and its students exemplifies the Wesleyan mission and traditions.
Moore earned a bachelor’s degree at Drake University, where she was
selected for Phi Beta Kappa, a master’s at the University of Minnesota,
completed advanced work at Texas Christian University, and earned a PhD
in mathematical sciences from the University of Texas at Arlington. She
began teaching at Texas Wesleyan in 1965, and has taught here ever since.
She has been chair of the mathematics and computer science department
for 14 years.
In addition to her role as mathematics professor at Texas Wesleyan, Moore
has served as director for several programs that bring middle school and
high school students from the community onto the Texas Wesleyan campus.
She has been director of TexPrep Fort Worth since 1998. Each summer,
more than 100 students in grades seven through eleven who are underrepresented
in the fields of math, science and engineering attend an eight-week
course held on the Texas Wesleyan campus. The students hear from several
speakers in industry, academic institutions, and government agencies over
the summer, as well as complete study in math, engineering, logic, physics
and writing.
Moore has been the coordinator of the Expanding Your Horizons in Mathematics
and Science Conference for Middle School Young Women for nearly
twenty years. The one-day conference, held each spring at Texas Wesleyan,
stresses the value of science and math and seeks to increase young women’s
interests in these fields. Approximately 350 girls attend the conference
each year.
Since 2003, Moore has served as director for Upward Bound Math and
Science Project at Texas Wesleyan. The year-round program provides
academic and other enrichment activities for 50 low-income, academically
under-prepared/at risk high schools students.
Moore has served on several committees at the University, including faculty
council and five tenure committees. She is the faculty sponsor of several
University organizations, including Gamma Sigma Sigma and Mortar
Board. She has worked with science professors on campus, including chemistry
professors Bob Landolt, for Science Laboratory Participation Day; and
Ricardo E. Rodriguez for Chemistry Camp and the Teacher Quality Grant
Program.
