The men's basketball program began at Texas Wesleyan
in 1935. Its storied history began to unfold in 1940 as the Rams
made their first trip in a string of four straight NAIA National
Tournament appearances. The
1947 Team still remains the most successful of all time compiling
a 32-4 season led by All-American Clifton McNeely. McNeely was the
nations leading scorer and first Ram player to receive national
recognition, scoring 725 points in a single season. The 1948 Team
would be the last team to reach a National Tournament for 35 years.
The 1983 squad finished with a 26-7 record and was the last to advance
to the national competition until the Rams appeared in the USCAA
Elite Eight in Detroit Michigan in 2001-2002.
The 1997-98 squad returned Texas Wesleyan to
the Conference Playoffs for the first time since the 1991 season.
Following a disappointing 9-16 season in 1998-99, Terry Waldrop
accepted the position as Rams Head Coach and went about putting
the second winning season together since 1991. The 1999-2000 Rams
tied the best winning percentage in well over a decade going
15-12.
The
2000-2001 season started off with a recruiting class that was among
the NCAA Division II elite. Several injuries, including All American
point guard Todd Chappell and one of the toughest Division II (NCAA)
schedules in America saw the Rams slip to 11-16 for the 2000-2001
season.
The 2001-2002 season saw the Rams bounce back
in outstanding fashion completing a 21-9 record on their way to an
elite eight appearance in Detroit to conclude the season. The 20
win plateau gave the Rams the most wins and best winning
percentage in almost two decades and laid the foundation for the
return to the NAIA and the opportunity to add to their legacy.
Texas Wesleyan founded in 1890 by the Methodist
Church, reaches out to a multicultural, multigenerational
student body in an urban setting using a variety of new formats
and venues. Texas Wesleyan offers the perfect balance - quality
education coupled with an opportunity to participate in an elite
NAIA basketball scholarship program.
