HAWKINS, Texas -
Junior Khayri McKinney's two free throws with eight seconds left led Texas Wesleyan
to a 73-72 victory over conference-foe Jarvis Christian on Monday evening.
The
two free throws were part of the Del Rio, Texas native's 18 points. He went 5-of-8
from the field, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc.
"Khayri
comes from a good junior college program we he has hit some big shots," head
coach Terry Waldrop said. "He definitely stepped up after that freakish turnover
caused by a wet floor."
Texas Wesleyan
(3-4, 2-0 RRAC) opened up on a 34-19 run, keyed by 10 points from senior Tommy
Johnson, who nailed two treys in the process.
Jarvis
Christian (0-8, 0-2 RRAC) closed the gap to 40-37 at the half, by going on an
18-6 run to close the period. Brandon Faulkner and Patrick Daniels led the way
scoring 10 each.
In the second half, the
Rams stretched their lead to as many as seven when junior Brad Schilder tipped
in an errant shot from junior Scott Reasoner to make the score 49-42, with 16:42
left in the contest.
A trey by Jarvis Christian's
Brandon Faulkner gave Jarvis Christian a 70-69 lead with 2:11 remaining in the
game. McKinney gave the lead back to Rams with a layup with 53 seconds remaining.
Then with 18 seconds left in the game, McKinney lost his balanced and turned the
ball over to James Woodson who made an uncontested layup.
With
eight seconds remaining, the Bulldogs' Brandon Martin fouled McKinney to set the
stage for the winning charity shots.
Johnson
finished the evening with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Schilder ended the
evening with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Rams outrebounded the Bulldogs, 52-39,
and registered 19 offensive rebounds.
"This
was a huge win because people do not understand how hard it is to win at Jarvis,"
Waldrop said. "We dominated the glass and got to free-throw line consistently."
Texas Wesleyan shot 36 percent (23-64) from
the field and 67 percent (18-27) from the charity stripe. The Rams also shot 50
percent (9-18) from behind the arc.
Jarvis
Christian shot 39 percent (28-71) from the floor and 57 percent (8-14) from the
free-throw line. The Bulldogs also shot 38 percent (8-21) from the three-point
line.
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action
Saturday when they host conference-foe Langston University. Tip-off is set for
7:30 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium. Langston defeated the Rams last season
in Fort Worth, 87-80.
