DALLAS, Texas - Junior Ben
Hunt tallied 17 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists for his first career triple-double
to lead Texas Wesleyan past Paul Quinn, 99-86, Saturday evening in Red River Athletic
Conference play.
"Ben stepped up for
us tonight, and did a great job of rebounding for a 6-1 guard," head coach
Terry Waldrop said. "This was not one of our better games tonight, but it
was what we needed to win."
Paul Quinn
(2-13, 1-3 RRAC) jumped out to a 23-15 lead at the 10:52 mark of the first half.
Jeremy Haynes tallied six points, while Taurain Fontenette added five points during
the stretch.
Texas Wesleyan (9-5, 5-1 RRAC)
fought back, using a 27-15 to close the half. Hunt led the Rams with 11 points
and seven rebounds. Sophomore Nino Eteinne gave the Rams a spark off of the bench
with six points in the first half.
In the
second half, the Rams increased their lead to 63-52, with 13:16 remaining. The
Tigers cut the lead to 76-74 with 6:07 remaining. They used a 22-13 run to reduce
the Ram lead to two points. Senior Tommy Johnson kept the Rams ahead, going 8-of-8
from the charity stripe in the last five minutes to give the Rams their fifth
straight victory.
The Rams had six players
in double-figures, which included Hunt's 17. Johnson led all Rams with 19 points,
while junior Khayri McKinney added 18 and junior Brad Schilder added 12 points.
Junior Scott Reasoner posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while
senior Vince Williams added 10 points and eight rebounds.
"Our
post play has improved with each game we play," Waldrop said. "Vince
and Scott both rebounded the ball well tonight."
Texas
Wesleyan shot 43 percent (34-79) from the floor and 73 percent (22-30) from the
charity stripe. The Rams also shot 38 percent (9-24) from the three-point line.
Paul
Quinn shot 47 percent (34-73) from the field and 73 percent (11-15) from the free-throw
line. The Tigers also shot 35 percent (7-20) from behind the arc.
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action Monday when they travel to take on conference-rival
Southwestern Assemblies of God. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Waxahachie.
