AUSTIN,
Texas - Junior Khayri McKinney knotched 25 points and dished out four assists
to lead Texas Wesleyan past Huston-Tillotson, 84-62, Monday evening in Red River
Athletic Conference play.
Texas
Wesleyan (12-7, 8-3 RRAC) started off hot, making its first five shots to take
an 11-0 lead at the 17:46 mark of the first half. Junior Ben Hunt led Texas Wesleyan
with five points during the stretch.
Texas
Wesleyan increased its lead to as many as 24 points at the 8:28 mark of the first
half. Huston-Tillotson (0-18, 0-11 RRAC) then went on a 16-6 run to end the half.
That run reduced the Wesleyan lead to 40-26 at the break.
"I
thought we stepped up and made some shots early," head coach Terry Waldrop
said. "We also played very well at the defensive end and that sort of set
the tone."
The second half belonged
to Wesleyan's McKinney. The Del Rio, Texas native went off, scoring 14 points
in the second period. The point guard nailed four treys down the stretch and kept
Tillotson from getting back in the game.
"We
have to get Khayri's parents to more games, because he always seems to produce
more," Waldrop said jokingly. "They played some zone against us and
Khayri took advantage of it."
Tillotson
did, however, cut the Wesleyan lead to 50-40, at the 13:00 minute mark on a fast-break
layup by Corin Douglas, but that is as close as they would get.
Wesleyan
put the game away with 20-4 run over the next seven minutes to increase its lead
to 70-44, with 5:29 remaining. McKinney canned all four of his second-half treys
during the stretch.
Hunt narrowly missed
his second triple-double of the game, tallying 19 points, nine rebounds and eight
assists. Junior Brad Schilder added 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Scotty
Lott led Tillotson with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Doyle
Coyle added 13 points and six rebounds.
