FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior Tommy Johnson
narrowly missed a triple-double, scoring 21 points, pulling down 10 rebounds and
dishing out eight assists in Texas Wesleyan's 110-85 victory over Paul Quinn Saturday
evening at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium.
After
two losses last weekend the Rams (15-9, 11-5 RRAC) got back on track scorching
the nets, shooting 63 percent from the field and knocking down 13 three-pointers.
Texas
Wesleyan jumped out to an early 18-12 lead at the 15:23 mark of the first half.
Junior Ben Hunt led the way making three treys and a layup for 11 of the Rams
first 18 points.
Paul Quinn (6-20, 5-11 RRAC)
scored the next five points to cut the lead to 18-17, with 14:23 left in the first
half. Taurian Fontenette led the way for the Tigers in the first half, scoring
a game-high 18 points in the first frame.
The
Rams then pulled away, outscoring the Tigers, 40-24, the rest of the first half
to take a 58-41 lead at the break. Senior Vince Williams came off of the bench
to spark the Rams with 13 points and four rebounds during the first period.
In
the second half, the Rams increased its lead to 29 points, using a 32-20 run to
start the second half. Johnson had the hot hand scoring seven points, while Hunt
and Williams both chipped in with six points each to give Texas Wesleyan a 90-61
lead with 8:56 remaining in the game.
Paul
Quinn never cut the lead under 20 points the rest of the way, as Wesleyan shot
68 percent in the second half.
Junior Khayri
McKinney led the Rams with 24 points to go along with his six assists, while Williams
and Hunt both added 19 points. Junior Brad Schilder chipped in with 11 points,
five rebounds and four assists.
Fontenette
led the Tigers with 26 points and four rebounds, while Greg Allmon added 20 points.
Demond Wilson tallied seven points, five rebounds and team-high four assists.
Texas
Wesleyan outrebounded Paul Quinn, 33-25, and forced the Tigers into 25 turnovers.
The Rams also dished out 28 assists as a team.
Texas
Wesleyan shot 63 percent (42-67) from the floor and 77 percent (13-17) from the
charity stripe. The Rams also shot 46 percent (13-28) from the three-point line.
Paul
Quinn shot 53 percent (31-58) from the field and 65 percent (15-23) from the free-throw
line. The Tigers also shot 42 percent (8-19) from behind the arc.
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action Monday when it hosts conference-rival Southwestern
Assemblies of God. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium.
The Rams defeated the Lions, 99-86, Jan. 10th, in Waxahachie, Texas. The Rams
