Rams shoot lights out; knock off #17 Houston Baptist, 113-91

     FORT WORTH, Texas -
The Texas Wesleyan men's basketball team tied a school record with 20 three-pointers in its 113-91 Homecoming victory over #17 Houston Baptist Saturday evening.

     The 20 treys tied a 13-year old record that was set against Incarnate Word in the 1992-93 season.

     Texas Wesleyan (18-11, 14-7 RRAC) opened the game on a 22-10 run in the first six minutes. Junior Scott Reasoner had the hot hand, going for eight points, which included two treys during the stretch.

     Houston Baptist (21-8, 18-3 RRAC) fired back with a 17-12 run over the next six minutes to cut the lead to 34-27, with 7:41 remaining in the first half. Pablo Avila registered five points and Ben McCain added four points during the run.

     The Rams canned three more treys in the last seven minutes of the first half to bring their total to nine makes. They took a 60-44 lead into the break on the strength of five Rams in double figure scoring.

     In the second half, the Rams could do no wrong, making 11-20 shot from behind the arc. Senior Tommy Johnson led the Rams with 28 points, canning 6-of-12 treys, while junior Khayri McKinney added 22 points, tying the school record for three-point field goal percentage, making 7-of-8 shots from downtown. Junior Ben Hunt dished out a game-high 10 assists to go along with his 19 points. Hunt was also named the school's Homecoming king.

     McCain led the Huskies with 16 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Chris Miller tallied eight points and nine rebounds. Miller is the nation's leading rebounder with more than 11 boards a game.

     Texas Wesleyan shot 53 percent (37-70) from the floor and 91 percent (19-21) from the charity stripe. The Rams also shot 54 percent (20-37) from the three-point line.

     Houston Baptist shot 56 percent (34-61) from the field and 79 percent (15-19) from the free-throw line. The Huskies also shot 40 percent (8-20) from behind the arc.

     Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Monday when it hosts conference-rival Huston-Tillotson in the regular-season finale. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium. The Rams defeated Huston-Tillotson, 84-62, Jan. 24th, in Austin. The Rams are currently tied for third place in the Red River Athletic Conference, tied with Texas College with one game remaining.
