FORT WORTH, Texas The Texas Wesleyan
University womens basketball team returned from Christmas
break to face the Lady Mountaineers of Schreiner University on
Thursday evening, and completely dominated the game.
The Lady Rams sprinted out of the gates,
scoring the games first 14 points mostly on fast breaks. A
free throw by Tamia Tolliver got the Lady Mountaineers on the
board nearly five minutes into the contest, but Wesleyan quickly
surged again, scoring two quick buckets to extend the lead to 17
points and forcing Schreiner to call timeout.
When play resumed, Shari Glover hit a
three-pointer to close the gap slightly, but the Lady Rams
continued to build up their lead. Shayla Coleman hit two
three-point shots and Ashley Walker nailed consecutive jumpers in
the paint, as Wesleyan scored the final ten points of the half to
take a 37-9 lead into the break.
The second half began just like the first
ended, with the Lady Rams doing all the scoring. Jashana Pitt
joined Coleman and Walker as Wesleyan scored the first eight
points of the half to take a 45-9 lead with just under 15 minutes
remaining. Rachel Estrada hit the second of two free throws to
break the ice for the Lady Mountaineers, who outscored Wesleyan
6-4 over the next two minutes, but that was the high point of
their evening.
The Lady Rams extended their lead to forty
points on two different occasions, including a 63-23 margin with
four minutes remaining, before coasting to an easy 68-30 win.
Coleman and Walker tied for the scoring lead
with 20 points apiece, and also rebounded well, pulling down nine
and eight boards, respectively. Shawndrika Courtney, despite a
cold night from the floor, contributed defensively by leading the
Lady Rams with ten rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. She
added seven points. Walker contributed three steals and two blocks
as well, and Kori Yates led all players with nine assists.
For Schreiner, only Sandy Murdock reached
double figures in points. She scored 11. Estrada recorded a
game-high 11 rebounds and added seven points and three steals, and
Glover scored six.
The Lady Rams, who improve to 6-5 on the
season, travel to Oklahoma to face Rhema Institute on Monday
evening, and then head down to Belton to face Mary Hardin-Baylor
on Thursday night. Their next home game is on Saturday, January 11
against conference rival UT-Permian Basin. Tip-off for that game
is at 5:40 PM. |
