FT. WORTH, Texas - The Sid Richardson
Center on the campus of Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth
will play host to the nationally known MLK Summer Pro-Am
Basketball League this summer.
Participants from all over the Metroplex, state
and nation traditionally participate in this five-year-old event.
Games will be from noon until 10 p.m., every Sunday, beginning
June 15, and concluding August 17, 2003.
"This league and new venue
provides a good wholesome atmosphere for the Dallas/Fort Worth
community to come together and see some of the top basketball
talent in the area," league director Wayne Lewis said. "Having
Texas Wesleyan host the games allows the players and the community
a chance to see what this university is all about."
This event has had a reputation for having
outstanding players including professionals from the NBA and
Europe in addition to top-level collegiate players and others.
Past players have included Oliver Miller, Kenyon Martin, Charles
Smith and others. This years field includes Andre Emmett
from Texas Tech University, Marcus Shropshire and Bingo Merriex
from T.C.U., and the leading shot blocker in the NAIA last season,
Texas Wesleyan's own David Johnson.
"We are very pleased to be able
to host the MLK Summer Pro-Am League," Texas Wesleyan
athletic director Terry Waldrop said. "The play is as good as
there is anywhere in America and being able to bring this type of
event to our campus is certainly an honor."
Admission is free and spectators are advised to
arrive early, as crowds for the MLK are usually very heavy.
