ODESSA, Texas - Senior David
Johnson tallied 18 points, 17 rebounds and seven blocks, but that
wasn't enough as Texas Wesleyan fell to UT-Permian Baisn, 73-64,
Saturday evening in Red River Conference play.
Texas Wesleyan (11-12, 7-6 RRAC) outrebounded
the Falcons, 59-46, tallying 29 offensive rebounds but shot only
30 percent from the floor. The Rams also went 0-20 from behind the
arc, as they lost for the fifth time in their last six games.
UT-Permian Basin (2-22, 2-10 RRAC) opened
the game on an 18-4 run, led by Marlo Saunders who tallied 10 points
during the span. The Falcons gained a 10-point advantage at the
9:42 mark of the opening period.
The Falcons increased its lead to 36-19,
with 2:39 remaining in the first half, as Rafael Alba III hit a
trey to give them their largest lead of the game.
Texas Wesleyan closed the gap by scoring
the last eight points of the first half. Sophomore Dario Henderson
and junior Anthony Martin each made two lay-ups, as the Rams cut
the lead to 36-21, at the half.
In the second half, the Rams opened on
a 14-9 run, led by Johnson who had six points and Henderson and
sophomore Brad Schilder each had four. Texas Wesleyan now only trailed
by nine points.
That is as close as the Rams would come,
as the Falcons' Lamar Cannon scored 14 second-half points to send
Texas Wesleyan to another defeat.
Saunders led all scorers with 21 points,
while Lawrence Kincade chipped in with 15 points.
Texas Wesleyan shot 30 percent (22-70)
from the field, which was their second lowest output of the season.
The Rams also shot 53 percent (19-36) from the charity stripe.
UT-Permian Basin shot 36 percent (24-66)
and 41 percent (7-17) from the three-point line. The Falcons also
shot 73 percent (19-26) from the free-throw line.
Senior Wesley Haynes posted 14 points and
seven rebounds, while sophomore Brian Carter added 11 rebounds off
of the bench.
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Tuesday
when they travel to take on conference-rival Jarvis Christian at
7:30 p.m.
