FORT WORTH, Texas - Junior
Johnna Flemmons scored 15 points and dished out three assists to
lead Texas Wesleyan past Jarvis Christian, 65-54, Thursday evening
in Red River Conference play.
Jarvis Christian (12-10, 10-7 RRAC) jumped
out to an early 20-12 lead at the 8:36 mark. The
Lady Bulldogs received six points from Louise Ukele.
Texas Wesleyan (16-9, 12-6 RRAC) fought
back, going on a 21-8 run to end the half. Sophomore Shawndrika
Courtney led the Lady Rams with 10 first-half points, before leaving
the game with an injury with six minutes remaining.
In the second half, Texas Wesleyan jumped
out on a 16-5 run to take a 49-35 lead with 11:05 remaining in the
game.
The Lady Bulldogs would get as close as
five points at 59-54 with 2:03 remaining in the game, but the Lady
Rams pulled it out hitting two free throws and two layups in the
last two minutes.
Texas Wesleyan shot 36 percent (20-55)
from the floor and 67 percent (20-30) from the charity stripe. The
Lady Rams also shot 63 percent (5-8) from downtown.
Jarvis Christian shot 27 percent (17-62)
from the field and 74 percent (17-23) from the free-throw line.
The Lady Bulldogs also shot 14 percent (3-21) from behind the arc.
Junior Shayla Coleman scored 11 points and pulled
down four rebounds. Freshman Stephanie Sewell led the Lady Rams
with four assists.
Jennifer Oko led the Lady Bulldogs with
14 points and eight rebounds while Ukele added seven points and
13 boards.
Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Saturday
when they travel to take on conference-rival Texas College at 5:30
p.m., at John Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas.
