FORT WORTH, TX: Texas Wesleyan University head men’s basketball coach Terry Waldrop announced today the signing of Andy Laitinen, a 6’7” 235 lb forward from Round Rock, TX. Laitinen transferred to Texas Wesleyan after playing two seasons at Huston-Tillotson University.
In two seasons at Huston-Tillotson Laitinen averaged 10.2 points and 4.8 rebounds in 54 games. Last season he led the team in rebounds (127), blocked shots (20), and field goals (122). He shot 60.4% from the field and had a season-high 21 points against 78-76 win over Texas College. In his freshman campaign he poured in a career-high 25 points in a loss against Texas Wesleyan.
Waldrop was looking forward to having Laitinen on the roster. “He adds a very strong and physical presence to our interior game,” Waldrop commented. “Coupled with his experience as a proven player at this level, we think he is a great fit for our program.”
After winning the 2006 NAIA Division I National Championship, Texas Wesleyan posted a 19-10 record and was ranked 33rd nationally at the end of the 2006-07 season.
