January 28, 2007

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (13-8, 6-2 RRAC) came up short in a Red River Athletic Conference contest with Jarvis Christian College (14-5, 5-3) on Monday.  The Bulldogs topped the Rams by a final score of 66-61.

The Rams were able to stay in the contest in spite of an off shooting night.  Texas Wesleyan shot just 28% from the field in the contest.

In the first half, the Rams led by as many as seven points, 27-20, but Jarvis closed the period with a three-pointer from Mitchell Johnson to lead 32-29 at the break.

The Bulldogs led for most of the second period.  Texas Wesleyan took a 48-46 edge with just over seven minutes to play.  However, Jarvis used an 11-2 run to regain control.

JCC led by six, 58-52 with 2:04 on the clock when Fred Eshon nailed a three, was fouled, and hit a free throw to bring the Rams back within reach.  Jarvis’ lead swelled to six again at 62-56 heading into the final minute.  A dunk from Dane Dmitrovic and two free throws from Evan Randall made it a two-point contest with 28 seconds remaining.

In the final seconds, Jarvis hit all four of its free throws including a pair from Roderick Braden with nine seconds remaining that iced the contest at 66-61.

The Rams out scored the Bulldogs 26-13 at the charity stripe, but the Bulldogs won the battle of the boards 43-38 and shot 41% from the floor.

Eshon led the Rams with 12 points while Dmitrovic added 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Aaron Lasane led Jarvis with 13 points.  Braden finished with 11 points and eight assists.

The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they host Bacone College.  That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off in the Sid Richardson Center.
