LANGSTON, OK: In a matchup that seemingly always comes down to the final possession, the Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (15-8, 8-2 RRAC) used a tip from Kennith Gober as the final horn sounded to top Langston University (14-13, 4-6) by a score of 60-58 on Monday.
The game evoked memories of Texas Wesleyan’s last game at Langston when CJ Higginbotham delivered a 54-53 win with a buzzer-beating three-pointer.
The Lions hit each of their first four three-point attempts and took a quick 14-4 lead. A poised Texas Wesleyan team chipped away at the lead until a fade-away jumper from Gober gave the Rams their first lead at 21-20.
On the next Texas Wesleyan possession Hector Mukweyi scored on a jam and converted a conventional three-point play to make it a four-point contest, but Langston closed the half with a score from Meshon Lewis to trail 24-22 at the break.
The Rams picked it up offensively in the second half shooting 55% from the field. Texas Wesleyan led by as many as eight, 34-26, but Langston scored seven unanswered to close the gap at 34-33.
With just under three minutes to play, Alburey Doss gave the Lions a 53-52 advantage when he hit one of two at the line. In the final minute, Gober drained a three, but Phillip Brooks answered with a three-point play to put Langston back on top at 58-57.
Fred Eshon hit one of two free throws to tie the game with 43 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Texas Wesleyan forced a turnover with nine seconds to play. After a timeout with three seconds remaining, Aaron Scott’s shot rimmed out, but Gober was there for the game-winning tip.
Eshon led the Rams with 18 points while Gober was good for 14. Eshon and Gober also combined to go 6-for-9 from long range.
Three Lions reached double-figures in scoring led by Brooks’ 18 points.
The Rams will return to action on Saturday when they host Texas College. As a part of Think Pink Week, Texas Wesleyan is encouraging all fans to wear pink to the game. That contest is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. |
