TWU CELEBRATES ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE
April 24, 2008

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University Athletic Department celebrated the outstanding achievements of its student-athletes on Thursday.  With three teams still in competition, the Rams have won three conference championships and four national titles.  They boast two All-Americans with several more to come by spring’s end, and nearly 40% of their athletes have posted GPA’s of 3.0 or higher.

The Rams honored all of their seniors and presented numerous special awards.  The Most Outstanding Male and Female Athlete awards went to Hayden Lackey (baseball) and Ines Perhoc (table tennis).  Lackey has already set the NAIA record for relief appearances and is just three shy of setting the record for total appearances.  Perhoc helped the Rams to four national championships, and defeated her coach Jasna Reed to win the women’s singles national title.

Mrs. Maurice Bounds was on hand, attending her 65th athletic awards banquet, to present the O.D. and Maurice Bounds Scholar-Athlete Award.  The award given to the male and female athlete with the highest cumulative GPA went to Brooke McNabb (softball) and Joakim Soderbaum (men’s soccer).

The Gene and Ann Burge Sportsmanship Award went to Erinn Miller (volleyball) and Ryan Ragsdale (baseball).  The Champions of Character team award went to the men’s golf while the individual award went to Mitch Hendon (men’s golf).

The Ram Mentor Award, given to the faculty member who has shown his support for the concept of the student-athlete, went to David Parise.  The Ram Spirit Award went to Sig Koenigseder for his outstanding support of the baseball program.  The Ram Administrator Award went to Josh Lacy.

Each team also awarded a Coaches’ Award (selected by the coaching staff), a Lewis and Dorothy Peek 3-D Award (given to the student athlete who shows the most desire, determination, and dedication to the team), and a Most Valuable Player Award.
