LUCERO, TARRANT NAMED RRAC P.O.W.
April 29, 2008

FORT WORTH, TX:  Lateah Lucero of Texas Wesleyan University earned recognition as the Red River Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week for April 21-27, while her teammate, Ashley Tarrant, captured the RRAC’s weekly pitcher award for the same dates.

Lucero's performance also netted her the NAIA's Region VI Player of the Week Award.  The freshman shortstop from Pilot Point, TX, had a busy week with 20 hits in 30 plate appearances as the Lady Rams won six of eight games.  She notched five hits and drove in two runs in a doubleheader sweep of Texas College then added five more hits and four RBIs as the Lady Rams took two from Jarvis Christian College (TX).  In a sweep of Langston University (OK), she piled up eight more hits and scored six times.  For the week, Lucero accounted for 14 runs scored, 11 RBIs, three doubles and a triple.

Tarrant, a freshman pitcher from Martin’s Mill, TX, tossed her second no-hitter in a week as she struck out a school record tying 14 hitters to claim a shutout victory over Jarvis Christian.  She nearly made it two in a row with a complete-game, one-hit effort to knock off Langston.  On Saturday, Tarrant turned in 6.2 scoreless innings against LSU-Alexandria before allowing the Generals to score twice to tie the game and eventually lost the game, 4-3, in extra innings.  For the week, she struck out 32 hitters in 18 innings of work.

Texas Wesleyan wrapped up the regular season at 18-29 overall and 17-7 in conference play.  As the third seed in this weekend’s RRAC Tournament they will play second seeded Bacone College (OK) in first round action.  That game is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start at Oran Good Park in Farmer’s Branch, TX, on Friday.
