EDMOND, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (0-1) kicked off the 2007-08 season at Oklahoma Christian University (1-1) on Tuesday. Unfortunately the Eagles jumped ahead early and never looked back on their way to a 64-46 win.
Dane Dmitrovic gave the Rams their only lead when he scored on the first possession of the game. Oklahoma Christian was nursing a four-point lead (21-17) with five minutes to play in the first half, when the Eagles rattled off 11 unanswered points.
OC led 32-20 at the break and started the second half on a 12-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at 44-22.
Texas Wesleyan shot 33% (17-52) from the field and 61% (11-18) from the free throw line. Their downfall came from long range where they hit just 1-of-20.
Among the bright spots for the Rams was Dalane Finley who led all scorers with 17 points while grabbing seven rebounds in his first game at Texas Wesleyan. Kennith Gober finished with 11 points.
“We are very young,” commented head coach Terry Waldrop. “We’ve got a lot of growing up to do. We are going to make some mistakes early, and the schedule is tough, but I like this team. We are going to be fine.”
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host Parker College in their home opener. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center and will be preceded by a women’s game featuring the Lady Rams against the Flying Queens of Wayland Baptist University.
