MUSKOGEE, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (4-3, 1-0 RRAC) took their first Red River Athletic Conference game of the season, 73-67 over Bacone College (3-4, 0-1).
The Rams came out hot and took a 12-4 lead in the game’s first five minutes. Three Texas Wesleyan turnovers then allowed Bacone to take a three-point lead with a 15-4 run. The Rams later regained the lead, 24-23, with a finger roll from Dalane Finley. Aaron Scott added seven points in the last five minutes of the period to give the Rams a 41-35 lead at the break.
In the second half, the game was tied at 57, but Texas Wesleyan pushed ahead 68-60 down the stretch. A dunk from Bacone’s DC Wrice cut the margin to three, 68-65, with 40 seconds to play, but the Rams hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final seconds including a pair from freshman Evan Randall that put Texas Wesleyan ahead 72-65 with 18 seconds to go.
For the game, the Rams shot 41% from the field, but 79% (19-24) from the free throw line. They also dominated the boards 46-28.
Dalane Finley turned in a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. Kennith Gober led all scorers with 18 points. Fred Eshon added 13 points and Andy Laitinen finished with 10 for Texas Wesleyan.
The Rams return to action on Monday, when they host Oklahoma Wesleyan University. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off in the Sid Richardson Center.
