Farewell Party for Leyla Mohamed

Photo of Leyla Mohamed Please drop by the purchasing department (first floor of the Administration Building) from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, May 22, to say goodbye to Leyla Mohamed, purchasing secretary, and wish her well as she moves to Pennsylvania. Mohamed graduated from Texas Wesleyan in December with a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance. Light refreshments will be served.

Guitar Fort Worth Presents Zaira Meneses

G clef Zaira Meneses will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 23, in Martin Hall as part of the Guitar Fort Worth recital series. The concert will be free to any member of the Texas Wesleyan community with a valid University ID, as a thank you from Guitar Fort Worth for Wesleyan's support of these concerts during the past three and a half years. Regular admission charge is $15-$25; show your university ID at the door to receive complimentary admission.

   Meneses has traveled widely, performing with the famed Orquesta de Guitarras, founded by Maestro Alfonso Moreno, in concert tours around the world. During this time, she was the recipient of numerous national and international prizes for guitar performance. She has participated in many international festivals, studying in master classes led by Ivan Rijos, Joaquin Clerch, Manuel Barrueco, Leo Brouwer, Roberto Aussel Adam Holzman and Eliot Fisk, among others.

National Police Week Luncheon

Clip art of police badge Texas Wesleyan University and the School of Law co-hosted a barbecue luncheon Tuesday, May 13, to honor local police officers and campus security officers. Ken Dunson, director of facilities operations, presented certificates of appreciation to Fort Worth Police Officers Steve Jackson, R. J. Benson, Rick Elston, Lt. A. G. Garcia, and Sgt. Keith McGuire.

   Austin Nettles and Brenda Weston were named Security Officers of the Year for the historic campus and law school campus, respectively, and received certificates of appreciation. Other security officers honored with certificates of appreciations were Jennifer Barrera, Jeanne Calway, Julie Caudill, Toni LaFreiere, Virginia Proffit, Chris Reneau, Joseph Sayers, Don Strain and Heather Walton for the historic campus. Law School security officers receiving certificates were Michael Mobley, LaToya McCurin, Edrick Marshall, and Jaborah Williams.

   The facilities operations department would like to extend their thanks to everyone who attended the luncheon and made it such a success. Click here to view photos of the luncheon.

 Men’s Golf Finishes 10th at NAIA Nationals

clip art of athletic ramsThe 10th-ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s golf team finished 10th at the 57th NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship at Indiana National Golf Club. The Rams shot a round of 298 in Friday’s final round to move into the top-10. The University of British Columbia won the title by 12 strokes over second place Oklahoma Christian University. BC finished at four over par, 1156.

   Kevin Doskocil led the Rams on Friday with a round of 73. Mitch Hendon shot a final round of 75 and finished tied for 17th overall at six over par. Stuart Martin birdied holes three, four, and five in succession before a bogey on six and a double bogey on seven dropped him to 75 for the day. Paco Saracho also shot a round of 75, while Armando Villarreal shot 82.

     Region VI flexed its muscle in the tournament. Region VI had the most qualifiers (six) of any region, and all six of those teams finished in the top 13. Oklahoma Christian and Oklahoma City finished second and third overall. Wayland Baptist finished fifth, Texas Wesleyan tenth, Northwood twelfth, and Southern Nazarene thirteenth.

     “We were fortunate to pass a couple and get into the top ten today,” said head coach Kevin Millikan. “The course was more difficult today, but we managed maybe our best round of the tournament. I’m very proud of Mitch. Finishing 17th was a great way to go out for a senior to go out.” Click here to view the full scores.

McNabb Named Academic All-American

Brooke McNabb Brooke McNabb has been named to the 2008 Daktronics-NAIA Softball Scholar Athlete team for the second time in her career. The award is given annually to juniors and seniors, nominated by their head coach, who have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

     McNabb also received Texas Wesleyan’s O.D. and Maurice Bounds Scholar Athlete Award this year. That award is given annually to the male and female athlete with the highest cumulative GPA. McNabb, a senior utility player, graduated on May 9 with a degree in chemistry. She also holds several Texas Wesleyan softball records. She holds the record for career games played after starting in 205 of the team’s 207 contests in her four year career. Her record of 995 career putouts shattered the previous record of 460. This season she hit .307 with one home run, 36 RBI, and a team leading six triples. In three postseason games, she hit .556 with a double, triple, home run, and six runs batted in. The 2008 Lady Rams softball team finished the season at 19-31 overall. At 17-7 in conference play they were the third seed in the RRAC tournament.

Congratulations to 2B Skinny K.I.D.S., the winners of this semester's weight loss challenge! They lost a total of 14% body weight total (21 pounds). Team members are DeAwna Wood, Sharesa Alexander, and Krista Hughes Bailey. Congratulations to Roberta Marley as the individual winner, with a loss of 8.3%.

Brookins to Serve on Board of Directors for Ladder Alliance

Ladder Alliance is a nonprofit organization that empowers at-risk women who are often victims of domestic violence to become self-sufficient by providing training in computer skills such as Microsoft Word, Excel, e-mail functionality and Internet usage and by helping them to rebuild their self-confidence and self-esteem.
