Miranda Receives Fulbright Award for Study in India

flame logo Twyla Miranda, professor of education and director of graduate education programs, has received a Fulbright Award to attend the Teacher Education Administrators Program to India. The program, which will be held August 9-22, provides U.S. teacher education administrators with a first-hand knowledge of a cross-section of Indian higher education instutitions focused on teacher education and training. She will have the opportunity to meet in three cities—Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata—with individuals and programs that play a key role in the planning and administration of school education in India.

Chancel Choir of Arlington Heights UMC to Perform Rutter's "Magnificant"

G clefThe Chancel Choir of Arlington Heights United Methodist Church will perform John Rutter’s "Magnificant" at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 22, in the sanctuary of the church. The 90-voice choir will be accompanied by Alice Walker, '84, at the organ, and conducted by Stephen Simons, professor of music at Texas Wesleyan. The soloist for this concert will be lyric soprano Amanda Gladden. 

     The choir will travel to Carnegie Hall in New York City the following weekend to perform the same work under the direction of composer John Rutter. “It is very exciting for many of our choir members to have the opportunity to sing this work under Rutter’s lead in New York,” Simons said. “This beautiful work has stretched the choir musically and we look forward to presenting this hour of music to our community prior to our departure for New York.”

     Arlington Heights United Methodist Church is located at 4200 Camp Bowie Blvd. Admission is free and a reception in the church atrium will follow the performance. For more information, call the church office at (817) 737-3161.

clip art of baby rattleCongratulations to Kathy Prater, director of the Freshman Academic Advising Center and associate professor of chemistry, and her husband Greg, on the birth of their son, Robert Chandler Tidwell. Robert was born on Friday, May 16, weighed 6 lbs., 15 ozs., and measured 19.75 inches. He's welcomed by his big sister, Megan.

Three Rams Named All-American

clip art of athletic ramsThree members of the Texas Wesleyan golf team were named to the 2008 NAIA Golf All-American team. Senior Mitch Hendon (Burleson, TX) became the first Ram since 2005 to be named 1st-team All-American. Hendon followed a 2nd-team All-American season in 2007 with an outstanding 2008. He turned in eight top-ten finishes in twelve events, while posting a team leading 73.39 scoring average. He also posted five top-five’s, including wins at the Charels Coody Invitational and The Territory Classic and a second place finish at the Rattler Invitational. In the NAIA National Championship Hendon tied for 17th overall. Hendon also turned the rare trick of being named All-American and Academic All-American in the same season for the second time in his career.

     Armando Villarreal (Los Mochis, Mexico) was a 2nd-team selection, becoming the first Texas Wesleyan freshman to be named All-American since David West in 1997. Villarreal was the Red River Athletic Conference medalist this season. He posted four top-ten’s and three top-five finishes including a third place finish at the Rattler Invitational, and finished the year with a 75.04 scoring average.

     Junior Paco Saracho (Guadalajara, Mexico) was named to the 3rd-team. He finished the year with a 74.84 scoring average while posting four top-five finishes. Saracho had a tremendous start to the season. He won the Fort Worth City Open in the preseason, and then took second place in his first two events, the Charles Coody Invitational and The Territory Classic.

     Texas Wesleyan had a tremendous season in 2008. The Rams won three tournaments, while garnering nine top-five and ten top-ten finishes. The Rams finished 10th in the 57th NAIA National Championship, marking the program’s 44th top-ten finish in that event. For more information, visit the Texas Wesleyan Athletics web site.
