Benz Receives Funding for Maize Research
Congratulations to Bruce Benz, associate professor of biology, on his collaborative research proposal on the study the domestication and spread of maize and its impact on the course of human history. Benz partnered with faculty from the University of British Columbia and Baylor University in their application to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. This three-year project, totaling $172,000, will support research activities related to a better understanding of the evolution and dispersal of maize in Latin America and includes AMS radiocarbon dating, and DNA and morphological analyses.

Texas Wesleyan Receives Advanced Education Nursing Traineeships Grant
 Texas Wesleyan University has received notification from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that we are a recipient of an Advanced Education Nursing Traineeships grant in the amount of $43,588. This program supports full-time students in our Graduate Program of Nurse Anesthesia who are in their first year of study. |
Robles-Goodwin to Publish in Diversidad Cultural y Educación: una vision compatida
Patsy Robles-Goodwin, assistant professor of education, will have two chapters published in a new book, Diversidad cultural y educación: Una vision compatida, edited by Lya Esther Sañudo and Ron W. Wilhelm. The chapters are: "Acá y allá: Una investigación binacional de los desafíos educativos para el niño mexicano migrante. (Here and there: A binational research of the educational challenges faced by Mexican migrant children)," Sañudo, L., Ponce, V., Marín, C., Wilhelm, R. W., Mohr, K. A. J., and Robles-Goodwin, P. New Weight Room Hours

Alumnus to Design Sculptures for Deep Ellum Rail Station

Brad Oldham, '89, in collaboration with Reel FX Creative Studios, will provide sculptures at the Deep Ellum Rail Station in Dallas, set to open in September 2009. The nearly $1.4 million contract from Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) will cover a series of sculptures at multiple sites surrounding the rail station, one of several new stations along DART’s Green Line. This sculptural installation will coincide with the September 2009 opening of the new Deep Ellum Rail Station located near North Good Latimer Expressway and Gaston Avenue. The concept and design of this project will be kept under wraps until later this year.
Oldham is a nationally-recognized product designer and sculptor who works with a team of artisans and business professionals that round out the company known as Brad Oldham, Inc. Based in Dallas, Oldham works with top interior design firms and developers nationally to provide iconic pieces for high-profile public, corporate and private spaces throughout the United States. In addition to sculpture, the company provides custom hardware, lighting, tile, fine furnishings, architectural features and historical restoration work.

Chancel Choir of Arlington Heights UMC to Perform Rutter's "Magnificant"
The Chancel Choir of Arlington Heights United Methodist Church will perform John Rutter’s "Magnificant" at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 22, in the sanctuary of the church. The 90-voice choir will be accompanied by Alice Walker, '84, at the organ, and conducted by Stephen Simons, professor of music at Texas Wesleyan. The soloist for this concert will be lyric soprano Amanda Gladden.
The choir will travel to Carnegie Hall in New York City the following weekend to perform the same work under the direction of composer John Rutter.
