Youth Program to Assist with Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative

Photo of Roy BrooksTarrant County Commissioner Roy C. Brooks, member of the Texas Wesleyan Board of Trustees, announced the fifth-year project for the C5 Youth Foundation Program. The high school students involved in the program will assist with his prisoner re-entry initiative in an effort to reduce the recidivism rate in Tarrant County.

The C5 program is a year-round, five-year program that provides day-in, day-out opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills, serve the community, and interact with caring adults. Activities planned for each age group are unique and progressive – each one builds on previous experiences and is designed to help the young person grow and succeed. In the final year, participants engage in a week-long community leadership experience designed to help them understand how decisions are made and how needs are met in the communities where they live. Teens have the opportunity to meet the people who are making a difference in their home communities and think beyond community service to community advocacy.

The press conference was covered by local TV stations NBC5 and CW33. Allen Henderson, provost and senior vice president, represented Texas Wesleyan, which supports the Foundation in various activities and provides scholarships for the participants.

Stidom has worked for the paper since 1978, when he started delivering the Star-Telegram as a teenager. "Delivering papers was a great way for me to make money and go to school," Stidom told the Star-Telegram. "I loved the freedom and independence a route gave me. My friends thought I was absolutely nuts to get up at 2 in the morning to go to work. I remember all of the wonderful subscribers that gave me fresh vegetables, pottery, etc. It was twice a day because we had both morning and evening papers at that time; the evening delivery allowed you to see your customers, and they always stopped you or waved."
