Humphrey Joins Texas Wesleyan

Photo of Linda HumphreyLinda Humphrey is the new Administrative Assistant for Student Records. She is the front desk person you will see when you next visit the Registrar's Office. She comes to Texas Wesleyan with previous student services experience and will be a valuable asset to the office with her strong customer service skills.

President's Picnic Tuesday, Aug. 26

clip art of blue and yellow balloonsIt's time to celebrate the beginning of a new school year at the annual President's Picnic! Stop by the Sid W. Richardson Center gymnasium on Tuesday, Aug. 26, for free barbecue, entertainment, raffle prizes and more. The Student Organization Fair begins at 4 p.m.; the food and entertainment will start at 4:30 p.m. The picnic is open to all faculty, staff, students and alumni. Families are welcome to join in the fun, too!

Academic Convocation: Sept. 9

Second Annual Back to School Bash

Dancing clip art The Second Annual Back to School Bash for School of Education alumni, faculty and DFW area teachers will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, in the Louella Baker Martin Pavilion. Wesleyan Cheerleaders and Dance Team Have Summer Success

Photo of Wesleyan Dance TeamThe Texas Wesleyan Dance Team and Cheerleaders have had a busy summer. Our Competitive Dance Team recently attended the Universal Dance Association College Camp in San Marcos. Colleges from across Texas, New Mexico, Puerto Rico and Mexico participated. The team earned several awards:

  • Second Place - Home Pom Performance
  • Superior (Gold) 1st Place Trophy - Traditional Fight Song
  • Recognized as the team with the “Strongest Traditions”
  • Most Improved Team Overall Trophy
  • 2 Overall Superior Performance Awards
  • 6 Blue Ribbons on Evaluation Performances
  • 2 Red Ribbons on Evaluations
  • Most Collegiate Small Team

The Texas Wesleyan Cheerleaders attended the National Cheerleading Association College Camp at Southern Methodist University this summer. Nineteen other colleges participated, including the University of Arkansas, Oklahoma State University, and the University of Houston. Their awards include:

  • Spirit Stick Awarded Daily
  • Superior “Game Day” Performance
  • Top “Rally Routine” Performance
  • Excellent “Game Day” Finals
  • Most Improved Squad
  • NCA National Bid to Daytona
  • 4 Gold Superior Ribbons for Performances
  • 6 Blue Excellent Ribbons
  • Recognized for Excellent Traditions

There will be a tryout for both the dance and cheerleading teams from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, in the Sid W. Richardson Center gymnasium. Open tryouts are also being held; contact Carolyn Iken-Owens at ciken-owens@txwes.edu.

Alumna Stars in Dallas Production of "A Streetcar Named Desire"

Cast of Streetcar Named Desire Theatre alumna Lydia Mackay, BA '99, is currently starring as Blanche DuBois in Contemporary Theatre of Dallas' production of "A Streetcar Named Desire." The production of Tennessee Williams' classic, and Mackay in particular, have received rave reviews. The Dallas Morning News noted, "All the actors turn in exemplary performances, but this show belongs to Ms. Mackay." (read the full review). Mark Lowry with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram has previously described Mackay as "one of Dallas' hottest talents." In his review of the play, he writes, "More than any other version I've seen, CTD's left me near-speechless for hours, still soaking in these characters and their motivations and actions."
