Extension of Stay for F-1 Students

F-1 Program Extension

You have been admitted to the U.S. for a duration of stay that is defined in your I-20 and I-94.  Duration of stay is (1) the time during which you are pursing a full course of study and are making normal progress towards completion of your program, (2) the time you may be working in Optional Practical Training after completion of studies or (3) 60 days after completion of course of study or OPT.

If you will not complete your course of study by the expiration date noted on your form I-20, you must apply for a program extension.  Failure to extend your stay could jeopardize your legal status and will result in your having to file an application with USCIS for reinstatement.

Who should file?
If you will not complete your course of study by the date on item 5 of your I-20 you can file for extension. You must have maintained your F-1 student status while in the United States by maintaining full time coursework, not working without authorization, etc.

When and where do I file?
You should file 45 days before the indicated date of expiration in item 5 of your I-20. Bring your application to the International Programs Office. Students who fail to apply for an extension in a timely matter are considered to be out of status and must apply for reinstatement

What is accepted as a valid reason for extension by the USCIS?
Valid reasons for extension are: compelling academic reasons (such as change of major or research complications) or documented medical reasons (such as hospitalization or prolonged illness).

Delays caused by academic probation or suspension are not acceptable reasons for a program extension.

What do I need to take to the International Student Advisor?

  • Financial documents including an updated financial affidavit and current supporting documents (bank statements on letterhead, governmental support letter, etc) - similar to those needed for the I-20.
  • A letter of recommendation from your academic adviser department containing an explanation as to the valid reasons for the extension and expected date of completion.
  • An unofficial transcript from Texas Wesleyan University to show that you have maintained full time student status.

If approved, the International Student Advisor will then issue you a new SEVIS I-20. You must keep this new document and all previous I-20 forms you have been issued. You will be asked to present them to an Immigration Officer on reentry when you travel outside the U. S. or whenever you apply for any future immigration benefits.
