Annual Meetings of Professional Organizations

The following are just a few of the many national, regional and specialized sociology and criminal justice organizations, each of which has an annual meeting.

Southwest Social Science Association is the organization of social scientists in the southwest region. Meetings are held in March or April.

Southwestern Sociological Association is one of the eight affiliates. An annual conference is held in March or April. In 2009 it will be in Denver, Colorado April 8-11.

Southwestern Association of Criminal Justice is the organization of Criminal Justice Professionals in the southwest region. Their annual meeting is held in October.

Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences  is the national organization for Criminal Justice Professionals. An annual conference is held in various locations around the country. February - March.

American Sociological Association is the national organization of Sociologists. The annual meeting is held in August.

Association for the Sociology of Religion is an organization of sociologists who study religion. Their annual meeting is always held about the same time and place as the American Sociological Association.

American Society of Criminologists An international organization concerned with criminology, embracing scholarly, scientific, and professional knowledge concerning the etiology, prevention, control, and treatment of crime and delinquency. Meet in November.

Justice Studies Association All scholars, activists, and practitioners of social and restorative justice are welcome.Meet in May.

British Society of Criminologists The Society aims to further the interests and knowledge of both academic and professional people who are engaged in any aspect of work or teaching, research or public education about crime, criminal behaviour and the criminal justice systems in the United Kingdom.

Sociologists for Women and Society An international organization of sociologists and social scientists who work together to improve the position of women in sociology, and in society.Members include women and men who work in academia, the private sector, government, and other settings.Winter meeting in February.

International AIDS Conference 2008 Meeting in August in Mexico City.

Society for the Scientific Study of Social Problems Scholars, practitioners, advocates, and students interested in the application of critical, scientific, and humanistic perspectives to the study of vital social problems. Annual meeting in August, same city as ASA.

SCHOLARSHIP AND TRAINING

National Conference for Undergraduate Research - This organization has funding for the NCUR/Lancy Initiative, the goal of which is to provide summer research stipends for students in a wide range of academic disciplines. Research Experience for Undergraduates Program - offers an opportunity for students to acquire advanced research skills and hands-on experience at the University of Texas, Austin.Tuition for 3 hour course, meals, lodging, travel allowance, @2500 stipend. Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan - a highly respected research institute that holds various short courses on methodology during the summer months. Email: summers@isr.umich.edu.

University of North Texas Dept. of Anthropology - A grant from National Science Foundation provides a 10 week intensive program teaching social science research methods to students who are members of groups typically underrepresented on college campuses, including ethnic minorities and first generation college students. Essex Summer School in Data Analysis and Collection - July -August in England. A six week session of over 60 courses on several different aspects of social science methodology, including recent advances in social science theory. There are also a number of one week courses. Homeland Security Undergraduate Scholarships for Rising Juniors - Awards for students interested in pursuing the basic science and technology innovations that can be applied to the DHS mission. Areas of study include: physical, biological, social and behavioral sciences. U.S. citizen, GPA 3.3, Junior in Fall '04. Stipend of $1000 a month for 9 months; full tuition and fees; for two years.
