REED AND OWENS 2006 ACUI SINGLES CHAMPIONS

FORT WORTH, TX:  Day two of competition for the 2006 ClearChannel National Collegiate Table Tennis Championships ended with two new singles champions – Eric Owens, men’s singles, and Jasna Reed, women’s singles. Both champions had previously faced their opponents in recent competition – with opposite results.

Defending champion Owens, a senior at Texas Wesleyan University,  beat out Adam Hugh, a senior at Princeton University, in a close 3-2 match. But at the North American Team Championship, Hugh defeated Owens 3-2 after Owens had led 9-6.

Jasna Reed (Texas Wesleyan) defeated defending champion Jackie Lee (UC-Berkeley) 3-1 to win the ACUI women’s singles title. Reed and Lee also came together in competition at the US Nationals in December – Reed lost to Lee 4-2 but went on to win the US Women’s title.

Reed and Owens together also won the mixed doubles competition, defeating Jackie Lee (UC-Berkeley) and Imran Pariyani (USC) in a 3-0 match. The Reed and Owens team went through all of the mixed doubles’ competition without losing a single game.

Ludovic Gambos and Carlos Chiu, both of Texas Wesleyan, took third and fourth place, respectively, in men’s singles play. Phuong-Linh Tran of the University of Houston defeated Whitney Ping of Stanford to place third in women’s singles play.

In other competition, preliminary rounds for tomorrow’s NCTTA team tournament were played. Team play begins at 9 a.m. Monday, April 10, with a new team champion to be named by the end of play tomorrow.
